GUIDELINES FOR THE CELESTE CARR TEACHER STUDY ABROAD
SCHOLARSHIP
The purpose of this activity is to provide a study abroad
scholarship to a foreign language teacher in
A scholarship may be distributed annually. Applicants must be a current member of
MFLA. Applicants may teach foreign
languages at the elementary, middle, secondary, or post-secondary level.
Applicants for the scholarship must submit the following:
1. A
curriculum vita.
2. Two
recommendations—with at least one being from an immediate supervisor. Recommendations should include comments on
the teacher’s abilities and interests as well as the benefit that a study
abroad experience would provide the applicant.
3. A list
of prior study abroad and / or travel experience.
4. Information
regarding the study abroad program in which the applicant wishes to participate
(name, dates, and location of program).
Information should include academic credit available and expenses.
5. An essay
in English by applicants of at least 250 words describing how this experience
will enhance and invigorate their teaching, benefit students, and benefit other
teachers in the profession in general and in Maryland in particular.
Applicants must include all information required in the
application packet in order to be evaluated by the Awards Committee. All applications must be received by MFLA by
April 30, 2008.
The Celeste Carr Study Abroad Scholarship will be in the
amount of $1,000. Recipients must show
proof of acceptance into the proposed program of study when $500 will be
awarded. The remaining $500 will be
awarded at the following MFLA Fall Conference where the recipient will present
a session based on the study abroad experience.
If for any reason recipients are unable to complete the study abroad
experience, the scholarship funds will be returned to MFLA.

The Maryland Foreign Language Association has established
this scholarship to offer financial support to a foreign language teacher who
wishes to study abroad. Applications must submit the items requested in the
attached guidelines. The awardee will
