How to Join

Three ways to join:

  1. Complete and submit a membership form with payment, as appropriate:
    • Regular - $20
    • Student - $10
    • Retiree - $10
    • First-time - Free
  2. Register for the fall conference, either the Friday/Saturday combination or the Saturday-only option.
  3. Register for the spring conference (only provides membership for half the school year).

What is MFLA?

  1. The Maryland Foreign Language Association
  2. A professional association of world language teachers, professors, and professionals dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the teaching of world languages
  3. A representative to our regional affiliate, the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL)
  4. A representative to our national / international affiliate, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
  5. Host to an annual two-day fall conference that offers swap-shop sessions, two-hour immersion workshops, keynote speakers, a banquet, over 40 concurrent sessions, and dozens of vendors with breakfast, lunch, gifts, and prizes
  6. Host to an annual spring conference that offers a pre-conference reception, 3-hour technology workshops, and concurrent sessions with breakfast, lunch, gifts, and prizes
  7. Publisher of a semi-annual newsletter that highlights updates and news of relevance to the field of world language education as well as provides instructional strategies, teaching tips, and materials
  8. Sponsor of annual grants, scholarships, and awards totaling more than $3,000
  9. Sponsor of the annual Maryland Language Teacher of the Year
  10. Conductor of mini-conferences in partnership with universities around the state, such as Salisbury on the Eastern Shore and Frostburg in the Appalachian Mountains, to reach out to teachers and prospective teachers.

 

Membership Benefits

Membership is renewable annually and runs from September 1 - August 31.
Benefits include:

  1. Reduced registration fees for both the fall and spring conferences and the fall banquet (a potential savings of $75)
  2. Two newsletters annually that highlight updates and news of relevance to the field of world language education as well as provide instructional strategies, teaching tips, and materials
  3. Eligibilty to apply for annual grants, scholarships, and awards totaling more than $3,000
  4. Eligibility for nomination for Maryland Language Teacher of the Year
  5. Eligibility for nomination for Maryland's applicant for the SANS, Inc. / Meade Leadership Program
  6. Membership on the MFLA Listserv
